Credit Suisse Gold History
Founded in 1856 by Alfred Escher, the Schweizerische Kreditanstalt Bank that would come to be known internationally as Credit Suisse rapidly grew on the back of other industries in Switzerland and the continued expansion of the railroads to become the biggest bank in the country by 1871.
The first branch was opened in Basel, Switzerland in 1905 when it took over the city’s branch of the Oberrheinische Bank. By 1940, the New York branch was in operation. Today it is Switzerland’s second largest bank (behind UBS AG) and one of the top financial services companies in the world.
Credit Suisse Gold Refinery
In 1967, the bank purchased 80% of the Valcambi Gold Refinery in Balerna, Switzerland which remains today one of the largest manufacturers of cast bars and minted ingots in the world.
The following year in 1968, Valcambi gained accreditation on the ‘Good Delivery List’ of the London Bullion Market Association which is internationally accepted to be the most important publication of its type by any Gold Exchange worldwide.
The ‘Good Delivery List’ means that specified bars of a refinery can be accepted without question in settlement against transactions conducted between each other and with other acceptable counterparts.
In 1980, the bank took 100% ownership of the refinery, however in 2003, ownership changed once again as Valcambi became a wholly-owned subsidiary of European Gold Refineries Holding SA (EGR).
Nonetheless, for over 40 years Valcambi has been and still is the sole manufacturer of all Credit Suisse fine gold products issued by the bank. The certification stamp of Valcambi ‘CHI Essayeur Fondeur’ can be seen towards the bottom of all their gold bars sealing their authenticity and credibility.
